Horror, action, drama, and a reflection on the importance of living your life the best way you can. This is a way to summarize what Day One is about.
"A Quiet Place" was released in 2018. The story was created by John Krasinski, who also directed and acted as one of the main characters. When I first saw what it was about, I knew I would like it, and I was right. "A Quiet Place" perfectly balances horror, drama, and mystery.
When I heard that there would be another movie in the franchise, I was excited. It was a whole new movie with different characters and more than that: it would show the first day when the apocalypse began.
However, "Day One" was not what I expected. While in "A Quiet Place," we have a family, and the world has not been the same for some time now, "Day One" presents a new character who has lost track of her life and who she is.
I was expecting more action and horror when I watched it. Seeing how everything changed from one day to another and the creatures had horror in them, but besides that, not much.
The movie is more of a reflection on how you have to experience and live your life because you don’t know what is going to happen the next day. Sam (interpreted by Lupita Nyong'o) is an interesting character who knows what she wants. With a terminal disease, Sam knows that she is running out of time, and the movie follows this moment where she feels she is finally free and can do whatever she wants to do.
After watching the first "A Quiet Place," I don’t know if this movie was really necessary or if it added something new to the franchise at all. The acting was great, the scenario was great, production was great, but plot-wise… I don’t think it was a relevant story to add.
I saw some people saying they expected to leave the theater scared, but it turns out they left crying, and I couldn’t agree more. If you like emotional movies set in a post-apocalyptic world and environment, this movie is for you. If you are looking for a strong horror movie, "Day One" might not be the story for you this time.
Overall, it is a good movie. I believe that the expectation to find a different plot and even genre may have influenced my honest opinion about the film. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. But keep in mind that you will find more drama than horror.
Keep up with the drama and see you soon,
Gabi
