It was a good day for fans of The Hunger Games universe!

On June 6, Scholastic announced a new book set in the series — or should I say, a spin-off? After a decade since the last release ("The Mockingjay"), Suzanne Collins published "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" in 2020, a prequel following a young President Snow. According to an announcement, on March 18, 2025, she will release "Sunrise on the Reaping," a book that will delve into Haymitch's story.

Details about the book itself are scarce, but it will revisit the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of "The Hunger Games," beginning on the morning of the Second Quarter Quell reaping.

For readers familiar with the series, in "Catching Fire," Katniss and Peeta watch their mentor's videos, which briefly explain what happened in his year. Haymitch's Games featured 48 tributes instead of the usual 24.

The idea of bringing Haymitch's story to life is interesting, but it raises questions about Collins' approach. Unlike "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," which added depth by exploring Snow's backstory, Haymitch's story already has some background established. This leaves readers wondering what new dimensions the book and story will bring to the universe.

In less than five hours after the book announcement, Lionsgate, the company behind the five "Hunger Games" movies, revealed that "Sunrise on the Reaping" will also be adapted into a film, set for release on November 20, 2026. June 6th was indeed a memorable day for fans!

However, some questions have arisen from fans: Is it too early to confirm a movie adaptation? Was the book really necessary? Will it be compelling given the existing information about the Quarter Quell?

Answers to these questions will only come on March 18, 2025. And I don’t know about you guys, but I am already preordering the book!

Stick with the drama, and see you soon!

Gabi
